Title: An Incentive-Aware Framework for A/B Testing

Abstract: Workers propose ideas drawn from a distribution, and firms use an A/B test to obtain a noisy estimate of each idea’s value. We consider the problem of choosing the optimal (p-value) implementation threshold when the distribution of ideas is endogenous to the threshold chosen. In this framework, a lower bar for acceptance, proposed in prior work without incentive effects, may degrade the quality of proposed innovations. Specifying and estimating a model of agent incentives is challenging, so we take a minimax regret approach instead, and choose a threshold that is optimal over a range of possible strategic behavior. Under single crossing conditions on the shift in the idea distribution, we provide a partial identification strategy for the optimal threshold.  We illustrate our approach using A/B testing data from a large technology company.

Please note that Palazzina Tumminelli is the first building on the left entering from V.le dell'Università:
