Dear colleague,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am pleased to share with you the Call for Papers for a forthcoming Special Issue of the International Journal of Public Sector Management — which I am co-editing with Nicola Cucari, AntĂłnio Fernando Tavares, and Ellen Haustein — titled: “The Future of Local Governance and Management: Leadership, Participation, and Public Sector Entrepreneurial Spirit for Innovation.”

This Special Issue seeks to advance our understanding of how local governments—particularly small municipalities—are reimagining governance in the face of increasing decentralization, digital transformation, and evolving citizen expectations. We welcome theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions that explore a range of themes, including (but not limited to):

  • Citizen engagement and participatory governance mechanisms
  • E-participation and digital governance tools
  • Public sector leadership and entrepreneurial initiatives
  • Innovation in service delivery and administrative efficiency
  • Inter-municipal cooperation and shared service models
  • Public-private partnerships and sustainable local development
  • Institutional and regulatory adaptations for resilience

We are especially interested in interdisciplinary and international perspectives that highlight novel insights into the changing dynamics of local governance. Key dates:

  • Opening date for manuscript submissions: July 30, 2025
  • Closing date for manuscript submissions: December 31, 2025

Should you have a relevant paper in progress, or if you're considering developing one aligned with the Special Issue theme, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or wish to discuss your potential contribution.

With kind regards.

Matteo Cristofaro
