Dear all,
the exams went very well, with very little variation in the distribution of grades.
Exam A
I've appreciated the attempt made by many of you to look at the economic literature.
Some of you started their paper with a general discussion on "institutions" with a certain political science flavor. This was a little bit off topic (the question was on institutions and growth and the answer should have been more focussed).
I don't tolerate sloppiness in the editing. You had all the time to polish your text.
When we talk about institutions and growth we don't mean international organizations. We really mean rule of law.
Some of you also opted to focus on a specific country as a case study to explain the link between the quality of institutions and growth. This was a successful strategy.
Some of you extended the discussion to the role of institutions on sustainability issues. It was not expected, but it was very appreciated.
Some of you just focussed their analysis on one dimension. This was barely sufficient.
Exam B
For Question 1 the key variable to be used was per capita GDP (to be generated). The series should then have been transformed into natural log before undertaking the descriptive analysis. If I ask you about "world income" distribution you must control for country size using population :) Many of you just used GDP (some even without the log transformation).
Besides the histogram command (and also quantile if possible), the command summarize should have always been used. I was implicitly asking about sigma convergence. Many of you got it. Others managed to address the question using more sophisticated approaches. Others undertook the exercise of weighting data for the population size. This was positively evaluated.
Some of you were a bit imprecise in some explanations.
To address question 3 you should have used all the other data available in the data set. Many of you did it. Others have opted to look at other sources (some really successfully). Others just neglected the info available.
I've really appreciated the effort made in explaining the results. In the country-analysis some of you embarked on comparative analysis, while others have opted for a historical explanation.
Some of you have manipulated data in a fancy way.
Some of you have used all data available.
Stata do files should have comments (this a good practice when coding and many of you did an excellent job)
Some of you opted to integrated their analysis in Stata with graphical analysis in Excel in a successful way.
