During the plenary of the 46th Session of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the UN Secretary General, Antonio Gutérres announced the convening of the UN Food Systems Summit (FSS) in 2021. The FSS aims to launch bold new actions to transform the way the world produces and consumes food, delivering progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In an effort to engage the global youth, in 2020, the Youth Committee at FAO proposed the launch of the World Food Forum (WFF) as a global, inclusive initiative that aims to involve and support all countries, regions and members and to enable them to adapt and expand upon the WFF platform based on their own local circumstances. The WFF aims to align closely and lead to the UN FSS. Since the FSS is envisioned as a more technical and political summit, the WFF will serve as an external, open event to engage a much broader section of stakeholders in the realm of food production and consumption. The WFF will serve as the premier global event for food, gathering youth groups, top influencers, companies, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profits, governments, and the public around the key issues facing our global agri-food systems. In line with the need to harness the passion and creativity of youth and to support innovation, the WFF will be an event and platform created by and for empowering the global youth to address the issues facing our agri-food systems and global food security. The WFF campaign was just launched in December 2020. IFAD has joined FAO in the initiative and IFAD’s Change, Delivery and Innovation Unit (CDI) is acting as the institutional focal point in close coordination with IFAD’s External Relations and Governance (ERG) Department. The campaign aims to deploy sustained marketing and outreach to raise awareness of the WFF and the key inter-generational issues facing our agri-food systems, particularly to young people. It will culminate in a one-week, multi-faceted event from 15-21 July 2021. Beyond the event, the WFF is seen as a three-year initiative that will continue as an ongoing platform to build awareness of agri-food system challenges, potential solution identification, and potential global action to sustainably transform our agri-food systems and spark youth engagement. It will feature the annual, flagship WFF event each summer to continue to build momentum. In order to reach youth globally and spur their engagement and advocacy, the WFF will feature a range of “tracks” to align to different passions and ensure that there is an activity for everyone to join. To learn more about how you and your organisation can get involved, join us on Wednesday 20 January from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm CET.
