What next for Balanced Scorecard?

The Balanced Scorecard is a popular and powerful performance management framework: since it first emerged in the early 1990s it become a global hit and is now one of the most widely adopted management tools worldwide. A defining characteristic of Balanced Scorecard compared to other frameworks has been its ability to adapt and evolve over time - modern Balanced Scorecards incorporate almost 25 years of experience and learning, and as a result are more powerful, flexible and effective than any that have gone before.

Keeping up with the changes in Balanced Scorecard is a challenge (and something 2GC is pleased to do on your behalf!): as a result we see well thought out suggestions for improvements to Balanced Scorecard that call for changes that are already incorporated into the latest versions of the framework. A recent example of this is an article called "What next for the Balanced Scorecard?" published on the LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-next-balanced-scorecard-james-creelman) system. The article identifies four ways in which Balanced Scorecards might be improved: the article based its thinking on older style Balanced Scorecards (using design ideas from the late 1990s, but of a type still widely used to this day) - and so we were delighted to be able to inform the author that the latest versions of Balanced Scorecard include three of his four suggested improvements.

As we think others may find the discussion useful, we turned our response into a blog post which you can read here… that outlines how Balanced Scorecard addresses these suggested improvements. Follow the link to read more...

Popular on the website

Last months most popular resources were Case Study 4 regarding Balanced Scorecard implementation in a UK government agency and (perhaps surprisingly) the 2014 Usage survey report.

We will be starting our 2016 survey in September: we hope that you will choose to participate!
