Call for Abstracts for the

19th ICABR Conference on:

Impacts of the Bioeconomy on Agricultural Sustainability,

the Environment and Human Health

http://economia.uniroma2.it/icabr/icabr-conference/

The Organizing Committee of the 19th ICABR Conference invites the submission of abstracts and session proposals addressing the theme of the impact of the Bioeconomy on agricultural sustainability, the environment and human health.

Over the next several decades, the world faces the many unprecedented environmental, social, and economic challenges:  meeting the growing demand for food generated by population pressure, developing new and emerging renewable energy technologies to protect the environment from environmental degradation, improving health and general standard of living.

The Bioeconomy can provide effective solutions for the primary production, health and the environment. The co-existence of new as well as traditional production methods and technologies are of fundamental importance to promote sustainable agriculture, to build resilience and reduce vulnerability to nutrition and climate change, to ensure sustainable and healthy life and ecosystems, and national energy security through the development of bio©\based and other renewable resources and processes.

Biotechnology, genetic modification, DNA sequencing, molecular pharming offer different technological solution  to eradicate poverty and hunger eradication through increased crop yields, reducing child mortality and improving maternal health through enhancing nutritional value in foods, promoting green economy.. However, it also poses potential risks which could be counterproductive to ensuring agriculture and environmental sustainability, and human health.

At the same time advances in traditional technology are also increasing productivity and sustainability of agriculture, and preserving biodiversity. Biological research into soil and soil organisms has proven beneficial to organic farming. Agriculture resource management research and extension led to the spread of low tillage agricultural practices allowing double cropping. Changes in agricultural policies and availability of extension information and inputs have provided farmers with incentives develop innovative management practices that reduce resource and input use per unit of output.

The energy sector poses a particular challenge for green growth given the scale of change required and the extent to which many countries are locked into polluting and greenhouse gas emitting energy sources. Clean energy and energy efficient technologies growth enables opportunities for new green industries, jobs and technologies, while managing the structural changes associated with the transition to a green economy. In this respect, industrial biotechnology has grown rapidly in the last two decades. Biofuels have grown from heavily subsidized infant industries to profitable commercial industries in the US and Brazil.  The production of energy from biomass is growing rapidly in Europe.  Biotechnology is increasingly being used for the commercial production of high value chemicals.

Biotechnology is the basis for important new medicines and vaccines. The highly publicized experimental drug ZMapp, used to treat several cases of Ebola, was produced in transgenic tobacco.

Biotechnology is now one of the standard tools used to identify new targets for pharmaceutical research and the development of new vaccines and biological pharmaceuticals.

The 19th ICABR conference will explore these issues and will serve as a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on role and the way in which the Bioeconomy can contribute more to human health and the environment in the future.

The Organizing Committee welcomes abstracts for individual presentations and panel sessions addressing the role of the Bioeconomy on agricultural sustainability, the environment and human health.

To submit a 250 words abstract or a session proposal please use this link: https://www.conftool.com/icabr2015/

Possible themes for individual presentations and panel sessions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Environmental impacts of traditional agriculture, technology applications and farming practices, GM crop, biofuel/bioenergy production and biomass-based chemicals and other products.
  2. Measuring the human (or animal) health impacts of the Bioeconomy.
  3. Future Bioeconomy innovations that could improve health and the environment.
  4. Policies, regulations and enforcement of policies and regulations that could improve and possibly increase the contribution of the Bioeconomy to human health and the environment.

The Organizing Committee also invites proposals for satellite workshops organized before or after the Conference dates. Workshops can be half-day or full-day sessions, with the aim of highlighting ideas or works-in-progress on a specific topic. Workshops may involve panel discussions of prepared questions, debates, roundtable meetings or other formats. They may offer discussions of policy issues, research methods, emerging research results, teaching or outreach topics, issues in professional organization or other matters.

Proposals should include: session title, session rationale, names and contact information for the organizer and planned participants, as well as a description of the workshop format that include plans for discussion.
